BACKSTORY

Don’t Take the Bait was inspired, not surprisingly, by conversations I had with a friend who was experiencing scathing fallout from “taking the bait” on social media. The cost personally, emotionally and professionally was high, as well as needless.

At the same time, conversations were taking place with another friend on the verge of losing their marriage because of a war of words that got out of hand.

Proverbs 18:21 says it well: “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit – you choose.”  My hope is that this song will be an inspiring reminder to humble ourselves and choose words that give life and bear fruit.

 LYRICS

Harsh words can come your way
People talk before they know what to say
Their words can often ruin your day
But I say, don’t take the bait
Monday morning can bring the stress
It takes your focus, it tends to oppress
Overwhelm takes over, but I digress
And I say, don’t take the bait

 (Chorus)

Keep your eyes on the prize
Your heart turned to the sky
The Son of God is always ready
We need to make the choice
Be wise of the enemy’s ploys
And we will walk sure and steady

Perhaps it’s me maybe it’s you
The words we spoke...we knew
When we speak in anger it’s hard to break through
And I say, don’t take the bait
We spend some time and we make things right
When we talk things out and we walk in the light
We humble ourselves before God and others
Taking good care of our sisters and brothers

(Chorus)

Keep your eyes on the prize
Your heart turned to the sky
The Son of God is always ready
We need to make the choice
Be wise of the enemy’s ploys
And we will walk sure and steady

(Bridge)

We know it’s hard to do the right thing
To turn it all over to YOU
But help us Lord even as we sing
To do what we say we will do

 (Chorus)

We’ll keep our eyes on the prize
Our hearts turned to the sky
The Son of God is always ready
We will make the choice
And be wise of the enemy’s ploys
And we will walk sure and steady
