BACKSTORY
Cindy’s dad lived with us for 5 1/2 years at the end of his earthly life. We had some amazing conversations over those years as we were in the same house together.
It’s no secret that I love hot food. The hotter the better, but it has to taste good, not just be hot. Tabasco-hot sauce does that for me. I put it on most things.
One day as I was loading up my food with Tabasco (the "nectar of the gods" as I call it), IJ (Cindy’s dad) said to me in that beautiful southern accent he had, “Mark, you need to savor the flavor”. He always thought I should just enjoy the food without putting anything on it.
He also used to say to Cindy and me, “Y’all run too fast. You need to stop and smell the roses”. Ultimately, he was right. We were running fast and it was hard to “savor the flavor” of the day. It was hard to appreciate the day and what God offered us in terms of peace and joy.
I wrote this song with these things in mind-things I saw in myself and things I see in others.
Savor the Flavor is a call to stop and appreciate what we are given this day.
Breathe deep and take in the beauty of the day. Love your family, love life, love people, take some smart risks, work hard, play hard, seek the Lord in all things.
